What's that Mean?

We often use words that you might not quite know what they mean. Here are a few words commonly used in early childhood education:

 

Morning Message- This is a teaching technique we use to help children learn about print.  The teacher writes a message to the children. The class reads it together.  The teacher may use it to teach letter knowledge, sight words, numbers, print knowledge and much more. Sometimes a child may "share the pen" and help with writing the message.

3 D Shapes- In geometry, a three-dimensional shape can be defined as a figure or an object or that has three dimensions – length, width and height. Unlike two-dimensional shapes, three-dimensional shapes have thickness or depth.   Some shapes we talk about are  sphere, cone, cylinder, and cube.

Spatial Relationships- This has to do with positions and where objects are in space.  Understanding words like beside, behind, between, near, far, over, next to, around, below, right and left.

Subitize to look at a group of objects and determine how many without counting.

Rote Counting Counting without counting objects.

Phonological Awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate the spoken parts of words. Rhyming and alliteration is part of phonological awareness. https://www.readingrockets.org/article/abcs-phonemic-awareness

Alliteration is  the repetition of the initial phoneme of each word in connected text.  We aretalking about the first sound, so we may say, Big, brown bear.

Environmental print is the print found all around us. It is what we call the print that you find on signs, labels, and even logos such as the big Walmart  and McDonald's signs. Most 4 year olds recognize some environmental print. 

Emergent Readers/ Reading Skills    A beginning understanding of reading and writing.  This could mean the child sees the first letter of his name and says, "That's my name."   The child knows that text  has meaning. Book Knowledge Knowing that a book is held right side up, tat you start from the front and go to the back. That an authors writes the book and an illustrator makes the pictures. That the front is called the cover and the part that holds the book together is the spine. Understanding that some books tells stories (fiction) while other books give factual information ( non fiction or informational).

Print Knowedge Understanding that letters are symbols for sounds, groups of letters make words and that words  can be spoken and have meaning.  Understanding that groups of letters make a sentence.  Understanding punctuation. Knowing that you read from left to right.

Gross Motor the skills invovling the lartger mucscles such as those used for running, throwing, balancing, and kicking.

Fine Motor skills using our small muscles, often the hands to write and connect objects.

Excutive Functioning is a group of mental  abilities as basic as self-control, memory, self-awareness, reasoning, problem solving and more. They allow us to self regulate, plan and focus.

Social Emotional Skills are how cxhildren get along with others, recognize emotions in self and others.  It includes taking turns, becoming independent in following routines, interacting more with peers, engaging in meaningful relationships with others, controlling emotions, and developing a positive self-image.
